A bear is a big, hairy man with his own subculture; a cub is a younger bear.
On the gay scene, a bear is a big, hairy man – often with a beard and a cosy, down-to-earth manner. A whole subculture has grown up around bears, with its own meet-ups and even its own flag.
A cub is a younger bear: also big and hairy, just not quite as mature yet. Many cubs are drawn to older bears, and plenty of bears are daddies at the same time.
The bear scene sees itself as an alternative to a smooth, gym-toned ideal of beauty. What counts here is feeling at home in your own body.
