Breadcrumbing means tossing someone only small signs of interest to keep them hooked, without really meaning it.
Breadcrumbing comes from “breadcrumbs”. Someone who breadcrumbs scatters little morsels of attention: a like here, a short message there, plus a vague “We should really meet up sometime”. That keeps the other person interested – but nothing committed ever follows.
For the one getting the crumbs, it’s wearing. Every little message raises hope, and yet you never get any further. A typical pattern: days of silence, then suddenly “Hey, just thinking of you” – and then nothing again.
