A red flag is a warning sign, a green flag a good sign, a beige flag an odd but harmless quirk.
The three flags help you size someone up. A red flag is a warning sign: behaviour that can point to problems, such as pressure, lies or disrespect. A green flag is the opposite, a good sign – for example when he replies reliably and respects your boundaries. A beige flag is neither good nor bad, just particular: a small, odd quirk that makes you smile more than anything.
The Cambridge Dictionary added the terms in October 2023.
Examples: “He wants nudes after three messages” is a red flag. “He asks whether he may call” is a green flag. “He only replies with voice messages” is a beige flag.
