PrEP is an HIV medication that HIV-negative people take preventively and that, taken correctly, protects against HIV as reliably as condoms.
PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, meaning prevention before possible contact with HIV. HIV-negative people take an HIV medication for this.
According to the Deutsche Aidshilfe, PrEP taken correctly protects against HIV as reliably as condoms. Important: it doesn’t protect against other sexually transmitted infections.
In Germany, PrEP has been covered by statutory health insurance since 2019 for people at increased risk of HIV. This includes regular testing, also for other sexually transmitted infections.
