U=U means “undetectable = untransmittable”: anyone with HIV who is successfully treated does not pass the virus on through sex.
U=U stands for “undetectable = untransmittable”; in German it’s n=n, for “nicht nachweisbar = nicht übertragbar”.
What it means: if a person with HIV is on treatment and their viral load has been below 200 copies per millilitre for at least six months, HIV cannot be transmitted through sex. That’s how the Deutsche Aidshilfe explains it.
It’s one of the most important messages of recent years. It takes away many people with HIV’s fear of infecting others and helps break down old prejudices. Anyone who writes “U=U” or “n=n” in their profile is saying: I’m on treatment, and there’s no risk of HIV from me during sex.
“I’m poz, but U=U – if you have any questions, just ask.”
