Gooning

“Gooning” (in German youth slang “goonen”) describes hours of excessive masturbation to porn, meant to feel almost like a trance. In young people’s everyday language, though, the word is often used only ironically – as a crude term for masturbating in general or to mock someone who spends too much time alone in front of a screen.

The word comes from English-language internet forums. In 2025 it came second in Germany’s Youth Word of the Year vote (Jugendwort des Jahres) run by the publisher Langenscheidt. Langenscheidt explicitly pointed out the addiction aspect behind the original term.

In a chat it might sound like this: “Sorry, was completely offline yesterday, just gooning 😅”. Usually it’s meant as a flippant admission, not necessarily a literal report.
