“Das crazy” is the German all-purpose reply for “wow” or “huh, okay” – and Germany’s Youth Word of the Year 2025.
“Das crazy” is German youth slang – literally “that crazy” – and a reply that always fits, especially when you can’t think of anything better. Depending on the tone, it means “wow”, “intense” or simply “huh, okay”. It can express genuine amazement, but also polite disinterest.
The phrase is Germany’s Youth Word of the Year (Jugendwort des Jahres) 2025 and caught on precisely because it’s so non-committal: you show you’ve listened without taking a position.
An example from a chat: you mention that you once stood in the front row at a concert, and you get back: “das crazy”. That isn’t a brush-off, more of a nod.
