“Goofy” means clumsy, silly or a bit odd – Germany’s Youth Word of the Year 2023.
“Goofy” means clumsy, silly, a little bit odd.
In Germany the English word was chosen as Youth Word of the Year (Jugendwort des Jahres) 2023. It often turns up in the combination “goofy ahh” – the “ahh” stands for “ass” and is just an intensifier: “totally silly”.
The word is rarely meant nastily. It can be affectionate (“you’re so goofy”) or slightly mocking when something just seems ridiculous.
In a chat: “Just left the house wearing two different shoes, so goofy 😂”. A fitting reply: “As long as they’re comfy – and now at least you’ve got a good story.”

If someone calls you “goofy” because you made a bad joke, take it as a sign the mood is relaxed. A bit of silliness often connects people more than the perfectly worded compliment.
