“Glazing” means praising someone excessively and undeservedly – as if coating them in thick sugar icing.
“Glazing” (in German youth slang also “glazen”) comes from “glaze”, the icing on a doughnut. It means coating someone so thickly in praise that it seems over the top and no longer deserved. Someone who glazes idolises, flatters or celebrates someone far beyond what’s appropriate.
The expression comes from African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and hip-hop and has been widespread since around 2023.
In a chat it can go two ways. Self-mocking: “Sorry, I’m glazing you quite a bit right now, but your smile is just great.” Or as teasing: “Stop glazing, my cooking isn’t that good.”

If you get lots of compliments and the other person apologises for “glazing”, just enjoy it and give something back. If the praise feels put on, though, it’s worth a second look – real interest shows in questions, not just in flattery.
